100 Trombone Concertos



DID YOU REALLY THINK THERE WAS ONE HUNDRED ORIGINAL CONCERTOS FOR TROMBONE?? WELL...THERE ARE IN FACT OVER A THOUSAND!! THESE ARE JUST CHRISTIAN LINDBERGS 100 FAVOURITE CONCERTOS. The 35 first are listed in the order of how many times Lindberg has performed them with Symphony Orchestra, and the remaining 65 are listed A-Z. Lindberg has played A Motorbike Odyssey in its different versions 653 times up to date(July 2007) which is more than any other contemporary concerto has been played on any instrument.


1 Jan Sandstrom A Motorbike Odyssey (1989-2002)

In 1986 Christian Lindberg and Jan Sandstrom met for the first time in Iceland, and this meeting proved to become a very important moment in the history of the trombone. No other concerto than "A Motorbike Odyssey" has had a bigger impact on the classical music scene in the whole 1990s.

2 Leopold Mozart Concerto for Alto Trombone (1756)

Leopold Mozart concerto is the first trombone in history written 1756. It is the second most popular piece in Christians repertoire with 456 performances.

3 Ferdinand David Concertino for Trombone Op 4 (1837)

Mendelssohn conducted premired the beautiful concerto by Ferdinand David in 1837 (David later premired the famous violine concerto by Mendelssohn). The piece was a huge success and was played all over Europe in the 19th century, but the whole orchestral material was lost after a performance 1922 in Cincinati under Fritz Reiner. Lindberg has reconstructed the score from an existing piano reduction of the piece.(375 Lindberg performances)

4 Michael Haydn Concerto (1764)

Michael Haydns stunning concerto from 1764 was long forgotten, and the front page of the original has no title at all. Josephs younger brother was an alcoholic, but Mozart ranked him even higher than his brother as a composer! Lindberg has played this piece 212 times.

5 Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto

Written in 1878 this concerto has become one of the most frequently played concertos ever. Lindberg has performed it 176 times with orchestras all over the world including for instance Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

6 Christian Lindberg Mandrake in the Corner

Lindberg wrote this piece just as his third composition ever, and was surpriced himself over the instant standing ovation at the premiree. It has been performed by many other trombonists already, and Lindberg has since its premire performed it 146 times

7 Christian Lindberg Arabenne

Arabenne was Christian Lindbergs first commission, and it created a ground for his rapidly growing reputation as composer. He still performs it regularly and has up until now(july 2007) performed it 139 times.

8 J G Albrechtsberger Concerto

Beethovens teacher wrote this piece for the virtuoso Roman Korner, or perhaps, as one believes today, for the more famous Thomas Gschlatt. Lindberg has played it 135 times.

9 Jan Sandstrom Cantos de la Mancha

Sandstrms follow up of the Motorbike concerto was as successful, and the Independent wrote the following headline on the review: "Forget Richard Strauss. This is the one!" Lindberg performances: 113.

10 Jan Sandstrom Don Quixote

Sandstroms second trombone concerto Don Quixote was as successful as A Motorbike Odyssey. He uses Lindberg this time as an anti hero rather that the macho hero he represented in A Motorbike Odyssey. The World Premiere in 1994(Lule, Sweden recieved a standing ovation, 7 curtain calls and stunning reviews poth from the local press and from all the big Stockholm news papers.

11 Darius Milhaud Concertino dHiver

A classic for trombone written in 1953 on the ferry from Europe to America. A piece full of jazz elements, but also french nostalgia.

12 Luciano Berio SOLO

Lindberg and Berio worked together in Salzburg Festspiele for 2 months on this piece, while Lindberg was playing the part of Abulafia in Berios last opera Chronaca del Luogo. Lars-Erik Larssons Concertino for Trombone and Strings from 1955 has been one of the most frequently played pieces for trombone, partly because of its idiomatic use of both the trombone and the string orchestra. It is a melodic and youful piece in a neoclassical style.

17 Christian Lindberg Mandrake in the Corner for 2 Trombones and Orchestra

Lindbergs piece Mandrake in the corner was such a success that he was asked to do a version for two trombones and orchestra. This version was premiered in Madrid with the RTVE orchestra and broadcasted several times in Spanish television. It has also been played by several other trombonists, and in 07-08 season it will be performed with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under the baton of Lawrence Foster. Soloists will be Ricardo Casero and Valteri Malminviirta.

18 Alexander Guilmant Morceau Symphonique

Alexander Guilmant was in his lifetime regarded as one of the most important composers in Europe. When he died in 1911 his reputation was even greater than Mahlers. His Morceau Symphonique was originally written for trombone and piano, but has been orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Christian Lindberg.

This piece was a commission from the Sion Festival, Switzerland, where Lindberg was artistic director in 2002. The piece has extremely virtuosic parts and has been subject for a short documentary on Arte France, made toghet with the Verdi Orchestra of Milan, Italy.

23 Georg Christoph Wagenseil Trombone Concerto

This piece by Wagenseil from around 1770 was believed originally to be the first trombone concerto in history. It is not 100 percent proven that this piece is written by Wagenseil, but it most certainly is. After this piece was found in the 1960s many other trombone concertos has been discovered, pieces written before this concerto, so it is no longer considered to be the first.

Iannis Xenakis has pssibly written the most demanding concerto ever . The piece recieved its world premiere during the Stockholm New Music festival in 1993, and was a result of a long collaboration between Lindberg and Xenakis starting already in 1985.

27 Kalevi Aho: Sinfonia Concertante

Kalevi Aho approached Lindberg after his performance of Hillborg trombone concerto in the Helsinki Festival. Aho was particularly interested in Lindbergs wide range of expressions and his virtuosity, and wrote this piece based on the past the present and the future. Osmo Vanska and Christian Lindberg has performed it together throughout the world in Concertgebouw, at the London Proms, with National Symphony in Washington, and in 2008 it is time for the Japanese premiere with the Tokyo Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra.

Nino Rota, the famous film music composer wrote a beautifully entertaining concerto in the style of a traditional concerto. The second movement was sent on Swedish Television on for many years at 12 oclock on new years eve, with Christian Lindberg, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Swedish Radio Orchestra.

33 Kazimierz Serocki Concerto

Kazimierz Serocki wrote four major works for trombone, and this concerto was the biggest of these works. Written for the polish trombonist Julius Pietrakovich, this piece was premiered in 1953 with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Witold Rovicky. In 1988 Lindberg actually got the chance to play the piece with Rovicky and his Warsaw Philharmonic, a concert from which Lindberg has intriguing memories.

The Australian composer Bracanin wrote his Trombone Concerto in 1976 for Ian Hankey. It was a set work for the 1988 International Trombone Competition held in Brisbane, and was won by Warwick Tyrrell who subsequently recorded it for the ABC Classics label with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 1990.

93 Jan Sandstrom Emperors Chant

Yet another collaboration between Sandstrm and Lindberg. Originally a piece for orchestra this became a wonderful trombone concerto inspired by the sad story about a father emotionally loosing his daughter and going mad.

94 Marijn Simons Vistining the Angels

The young and highly talented composer Marijn Simons wrote this piece for Christian Lindberg and it will receive its world premiere in May 2009 in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.

95 Nataniel Shilkret Concerto

A wondeful concerto in the style of Gershwin, written for Tommy Dorsey back in 1945. At the premiere in New York with Leopold Stokowski as conductor and Tommy Dorsey playing the trombone the piece received a wild standing ovation.

96 Bent Sorensen: Birds and bells

It was a unique collaboration between Bent Sorensen and Christian Lindberg in the 1990s. It all started with the stunnignly beautiful solo piece Bells of Vineta, included some chamber music pieces for trombone and string quartet, and finally led to the beautiful concerto Birds and Bells.

97 Ellen Taafe Zvillic: Concerto

Commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra this was the piece that Lindberg played for his Carnegie hall debut. This is what the critic said: "The solo part, passionately played by Christian Lindberg turns the trombone into a persuasive lyrical instrument. In the slow moment mr Lindbergs splendid playing sang against high, weeping string phrazes." The New York Times

98 Toru Takemitsu Gemeaux

Takemitsus most extensive piece, for solo trombone, solo oboe and two Symphony Orchestras was recently released on a live recording in Tokyo with Lindberg. An earlier Lindberg recording of the piece is also out on the market on the Denon label.
