In 1986 Christian Lindberg and Jan Sandstrom met for the first time in Iceland, and this meeting proved to become a very important moment in the history of the trombone. 3 Ferdinand David Concertino for Trombone Op 4 (1837)
Mendelssohn conducted premired the beautiful concerto by Ferdinand David in 1837 (David later premired the famous violine concerto by Mendelssohn). The piece was a huge success and was played all over Europe in the 19th century, but the whole orchestral material was lost after a performance 1922 in Cincinati under Fritz Reiner. 4 Michael Haydn Concerto (1764)
Michael Haydns stunning concerto from 1764 was long forgotten, and the front page of the original has no title at all. Josephs younger brother was an alcoholic, but Mozart ranked him even higher than his brother as a composer! Lindberg has played this piece 212 times.Read more and listen
5 Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto

Lindbergs piece Mandrake in the corner was such a success that he was asked to do a version for two trombones and orchestra. This version was premiered in Madrid with the RTVE orchestra and broadcasted several times in Spanish television. It has also been played by several other trombonists, and in 07-08 season it will be performed with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under the baton of Lawrence Foster. Alexander Guilmant was in his lifetime regarded as one of the most important composers in Europe. When he died in 1911 his reputation was even greater than Mahlers. This piece by Wagenseil from around 1770 was believed originally to be the first trombone concerto in history. It is not 100 percent proven that this piece is written by Wagenseil, but it most certainly is. 33 Kazimierz Serocki Concerto
Kazimierz Serocki wrote four major works for trombone, and this concerto was the biggest of these works. Written for the polish trombonist Julius Pietrakovich, this piece was premiered in 1953 with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Witold Rovicky. In 1988 Lindberg actually got the chance to play the piece with Rovicky and his Warsaw Philharmonic, a concert from which Lindberg has intriguing memories.Read more and listen

Takemitsus most extensive piece, for solo trombone, solo oboe and two Symphony Orchestras was recently released on a live recording in Tokyo with Lindberg. An earlier Lindberg recording of the piece is also out on the market on the Denon label.Read more and listen
